LET'S GREEN THE WAY
The Festival of World Cultures is committed to making the Festival a greener experience for all. Being environmentally responsible is more important than ever in the current climate we live in today. With attendance figures of 250,000 people for 2007, we are asking all Festival attendees to help the Festival team in our efforts to green the Festival. So c’mon lets green the way….
Green Actions in place over the Festival weekend will include:
WASTE & RECYCLING
General waste bins and recycling bins (plastic, paper, cardboard and aluminium cans) will be in place all around the Festival site along with bottle banks where you can dispose of any glass bottles, and we encourage you to make use of these. There will also be a dedicated recycling centre area at Newtownsmith Green where cans, bottles, cardboard, paper and plastics can be disposed of responsibly.
In addition to this, 60 litter pickers will be in action over the Festival weekend with half of them solely concentrating on disposing of recyclable ware. Please make their job easier - pick up and dispose of your own rubbish in the appropriate recycling bin!
GETTING HERE THE GREEN WAY
Thanks to Dublin Bus and the DART, extra services including a special late night ‘Night Link’ bus will be provided over the festival weekend. These extrensive public transport services that Dún Laoghaire has on offer are in place to encourage you to arrive the green way. Whether by train, bus, on foot or by bicycle - It’s the little efforts that can make all the difference.
COOL EARTH
Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Councils Environmental Services Department are proud to present Cool Earth 2008 at the Festival of World Cultures; a two day environmental exhibition that will illustrate simple ways to reduce your carbon footprint! www.coolearth.ie
TRADERS
The Festival has requested that all vendors participating in the Festival use bio disposable products in an attempt to lower the Festival carbon footprint. Going forward, this request will be mandatory for all vendors.
FESTIVAL SIGNAGE
The Festival team likes to get the most out of everything and that includes the Festival signage. A concentrated effort is made to use and reuse all signage wherever possible, year after year. In 2008 we are still making used of signage that was produced in 2003!
Along with all these great green actions Festival of World Cultures are happy to announce a new association with Edenbee, www.edenbee.com, a new Irish enterprise that believes a little innovation can make a big difference to combat climate change.
This online social network can not only measure you current carbon footprint and also identify goals to help you reduce it but you can also chat and exchange ideas with other members all in the name of climate change. Festival of World Cultures has started it’s own network on Edenbee so come along and join in the effort and start buzzing about what you are going to do to lower your carbon footprint.
Over the Festival weekend, watch out for Edenbee buzzing around - you will be able to catch them @ Cool Earth where they will have the gigulator in operation calculating the combined carbon footprint of the Festival audience
