The 10th Anniversary Festival opens with a specially commissioned collaborative performance featuring four of the world’s most fascinating voices. Irish sean-nós singer Iarla Ó Lionáird, Canadian Inuit throat singer Tanya Tagaq and Norwegian ‘yoikers’ Adjágas combine their vocal talents for an exceptional once-off concert in the stunning surroundings of Monkstown Church.
Singer, solo artist and core member of the Afro Celt Sound System, Iarla Ó Lionáird developed his voice in Seán Ó Riadá’s cult status choir, Cór Chúil Aodha. A prolific recording artist, he has released two solo albums with Real World Records and collaborated on countless albums and film soundtracks including The Gangs of New York and Hotel Rwanda. An iconic influence on, and a pioneer of, the renewal of sean-nós as an art form, Grammy- nominated Ó Lionáird is a treasure of Irish music.
Winner of the Best Female Artist in the Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards and recent Björk and Kronos Quartet collaborator, the groundbreaking Tanya Tagaq pushes boundaries of vocal expression with her compelling and theatrical Inuit throat singing. Tagaq’s exceptional vocal range and extraordinary live performances are a primal and deeply emotive experience, earning her a global reputation as one of the most dynamic artists of our time.
Lowra Somby and Sara Marielle Gaup of the critically acclaimed Sámpi group Adjágas draw from the ancient Norwegian ‘yoik’, a mantra-like form of Nordic chanting particular to the region. An integral part of the Saami tradition, yoiking is a profoundly spiritual art form using sounds, rather than words. Their self-titled debut album has garnered both fascination and respect for these spellbinding vocalists.
Individually revered for their revolutionary approach to indigenous vocals, this unique collaboration will explore the theme of ‘homeland’, and the stark and stunning landscapes of their birth: West Cork, Nunavut and Sámpi.
