Hailing from Reykjavík, the musical capital of Iceland, Amiina rose to fame as long-term musical accomplices to Iceland’s super group Sigur Rós, contributing strings to their tours and albums Takk and the award winning Með Suð.

Formed as an all female classical string quartet while studying at the Reykjavík College of Music, a decade of musical invention saw these talented multi-instrumentalists – Hildur Ársælsdóttir, Edda Rún Ólafsdóttir, Maria Huld Markan Sigfúsdóttir, Sólrún Sumarliðadóttir – develop an experimental orchestral suite incorporating wine glasses, bells, metalophones, saws and a kalimba to an existing collection of strings, harps, xylophones, glockenspiels, harmonium, keyboards and tuba. When Sigur Rós ceased touring in 2006, Amiina launched their first solo tour of Europe and America, followed by their debut album Kurr, an exquisitely produced string-driven soundscape of neo-classical chamber-pop and choral harmonies; winning them the coveted 2008 Icelandic Cultural Award.

As otherworldly as expected, the band’s live performances are an ethereal, enigmatic and beautiful musical embrace. Having recently added a percussive and electronic layer to their bows, they are now a six piece joined by drummer Magnús Trygvason Eliassen and Guðmundur Vignir Karlsson (aka Kippi Kaninus) on electronics. With this new line up and electronic ambient sound, the world eagerly awaits their forthcoming summer release.

For the Festival’s 10th Anniversary, Amiina are joined by two of Ireland’s brightest contemporary stars; Kerryman Donal Dineen, the visionary DJ, world music adventurer and film maker, and Dubliner Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh, traditional and experimental fiddle player, whose breadth of understanding of Irish traditional music is unparalleled.
